Mercer is ranked No. 7 in ESPN’s SC Next 25 for the Class of 2028, and he will remain among the top players nationally even after moving into the 2027 cycle.

His commitment makes him Cincinnati’s highest-rated recruit as this is the first five-star commitment since Lance Stephenson joined the Bearcats in 2009.

For Mercer, the decision came down to relationships and the opportunity to represent his hometown.

“They made me a priority, and once I made my visit, I felt very comfortable there,” Mercer said. “Growing up in Cincinnati, it means a lot to me to play here.”

According to Mercer, Calhoun’s track record and personal approach played a major role in the decision.

The new Bearcats coach quickly established a connection with Mercer after arriving in Cincinnati. During the visit, the two reportedly spent time breaking down film and discussing how his game would fit into Cincinnati’s offensive system.

“Coach Calhoun knows what success looks like at Cincinnati,” Mercer said. “He’s been successful everywhere he’s been as a head coach.”
