The wildest numbers from the Knicks’ 22-point fourth-quarter comeback vs. the Cavaliers in Game 1

The Cleveland Cavaliers would probably like that one back.

With fewer than eight minutes left in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals Tuesday night, Cleveland led the New York Knicks by the score of 93-71. Victory is supposed to be assured in that case, especially when you are the underdog in hostile territory.

And yet … here we are. A furious comeback in the fourth quarter led to an emphatic beatdown in overtime, with the Knicks notching a 115-104 win to take a 1-0 lead. Game 2 is scheduled for Thursday (8 p.m. ET, ESPN).

There’s no telling how the Cavaliers come back from this. Donovan Mitchell looked hobbled. James Harden looked like a caricature of playoff James Harden. Jalen Brunson scored at will. So much happened in Game 1, so let’s go through the numbers.

Remember when the Cavaliers took that 22-point lead? The Knicks proceeded to outscore them 44-11 for the rest of the game.

The Knicks’ 22-point comeback is their largest comeback playoff win in franchise history. It’s also the fourth time they’ve come back from down 20-plus in the past two postseasons.
