In Will Wade’s first offseason as head coach for LSU basketball, he’s managed to build one of the most obscure rosters in college basketball. That theme continued on Tuesday with former St. John’s guard, RJ Luis Jr., signing with the Tigers.

Many remember Luis as a former Big East Player of the Year for the 2024-25 season. However, since then, he went undrafted in the 2025 NBA Draft and signed with the Utah Jazz and later on with the Boston Celtics. He never appeared in an NBA game for either team, with the exception of three preseason games for Boston.

In three seasons playing collegiate basketball, Luis averaged 14.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.5 assists. His last year at St. John’s, he put up 18.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2 assists.

Is RJ Luis eligible to play?

Currently, Luis is not eligible to play collegiate basketball, however, we’ve seen mixed outcomes with previous lawsuits, including Charles Bediako at Alabama, who was denied, and James Nnaji at Baylor, who had success.

The remaining roster at LSU

Again, Will Wade is brewing one of the more controversial rosters in college basketball ahead of next season that includes four players who played college ball last season in Divine Ugochukwu (Michigan State), Abdi Bashir (Kansas State), Austin Nunez (UTSA), and Mo Dioubate (Kentucky.

In addition to those transfers, Wade and the Tigers have also reached agreements with Maricio Santos and Brice Dessert out of the EuroLeague and Yam Madar, who was drafted in 2020 and played four years in the EuroLeague as well.
