Former Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas reportedly rejoining team as a scout

Isaiah Thomas is back with the Boston Celtics — in the front office. The former NBA guard is reportedly rejoining the franchise as a pro and college scout, per the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach.

Thomas will be based in his hometown of Seattle, per Himmelsbach. The 37-year-old was born in Tacoma, Washington, and played at the University of Washington before heading to the NBA.

Thomas has already joined Boston’s executives in Chicago for the NBA Combine, which began this week. Per Himmelsbach, Thomas has helped with interviewing draft prospects and is learning about the overall process. Boston holds the 27th overall pick in the draft.

Thomas played for the Celtics from 2015-2017 in the most successful span of his injury-shortened career. The point guard joined Boston during through the 2014-15 season and quickly helped revitalize the team, earning All-Star nods in 2016 and 2017, though he suffered through a career-altering hip injury during the 2016-17 postseason.

Ahead of the 2017-18 season, Thomas was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers as part of the Kyrie Irving trade. Lingering injuries stalled Thomas’ career, and he ended up bouncing between five different NBA organizations over the next five seasons.

Thomas has launched multiple potential comebacks over the years, most recently signing with the Utah Jazz G League affiliate, the Salt Lake City Stars, in January 2025. Before then, he signed a 10-day contract with the Phoenix Suns in March 2024, but did not play.
