Texas A&M basketball is in great shape under coach Bucky McMillan, who is entering his second season at the helm after leading the Aggies to the NCAA Tournament, including an appearance in the Round of 32 before eventually falling to 2-seed Houston. This success was not expected after McMillan, who was the final Power 4 coach hired last April, had to build his entire roster from the transfer portal.
Senior forward Rashaun Agee led the Aggies in scoring and rebounds during his one and only season in College Station, and while he will be tough to replace, the addition of seven players from the transfer portal, led by former Kansas State guard PJ Haggerty, who averaged nearly 24 points per game last season, has replenished a roster that was lacking size and a go-to scoring option.

Returning to the roster, forwards Zach Clemence, Jamie Vinson, and Mackenzie Mgbako could all slot in as starters, combined with Haggerty and former NBA G-League guard Bryson Warren, while former LSU guard Jalen Reece is a player on the rise and should serve as the sixth man to provide an offensive spark off the bench.
However, after landing LMU transfer forward Jalen Shelley, Texas A&M’s size disadvantage last season has officially ended, as Shelley easily fit in as the starting wing and became a reliable scorer near the rim. While McMillan will likely add at least one more forward to finish the roster and head into the summer, college basketball analyst Any Katz placed the Aggies No. 32 in his preseason Top 40.
With the controversial news that the NCAA Tournament will expand to a 76-team field, predicting any team’s future at this point is simply speculation, but it’s clear that this new roster possesses the traits needed to thrive in Bucky McMillan’s fast-paced, high-scoring system.
