No. 1 overall recruit Tyran Stokes commits to Kansas over Kentucky

In a major recruiting decision that shifts the landscape of the 2026 class, Tyran Stokes, the nation’s No. 1 overall prospect, has committed to the Kansas Jayhawks over Kentucky Basketball. Stokes announced the decision during Tuesday’s NBA Tip-Off show on ESPN.

The 6-foot-7, 5-star small forward had long been a top target for Mark Pope, who was hoping to land a signature high school recruit to help reshape Kentucky’s roster-building narrative. Instead, Stokes’ decision delivers a significant setback as the Wildcats continue to search for elite talent on the high school level.

Originally from Louisville, Stokes had strong ties to Kentucky throughout his recruitment, and at various points, the Wildcats were seen as a serious contender. However, Kansas, led by Bill Self, ultimately secured the commitment.

Stokes, who has starred in California at Notre Dame and also in Seattle with Rainier Beach High School, brings a rare combination of size, strength, and versatility. With an NBA-ready frame and the ability to handle the ball, create offense, and dominate in transition, he projects as a potential one-and-done prospect at the next level.

For Kentucky, missing on Stokes is a tough pill to swallow, especially given the program’s push to return to national prominence after a 22-14 season. Pope and his staff will now likely turn their focus to the transfer portal and other high-level recruits, as well as international prospects.

While the Wildcats remain active on the recruiting trail, Stokes’ commitment to Kansas marks one of the biggest decisions of the 2026 cycle.
