The NCAA is in the process of expanding its most lucrative event. Officials are currently working to expand the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s College Basketball Tournaments from 68 teams to 76, which would create more March Madness games.

The March Madness expansion plan will be voted on in the coming weeks, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported. The college basketball insider added that they “have what they need” to get the change approved. The biggest remaining hurdle seems to be working out new media agreements.

While everyone would expect the NCAA to push for an expanded field to increase revenue, Thamel reports that it is primarily looking to change the structure to provide more “access” for power conference teams.

“The driver of this move hasn’t been money, but rather access,” Thamel wrote. “The expansion has been driven by power conferences, which have grown throughout the course of the current deal. The mechanics of the expansion in the men’s tournament will include eight additional at-large bids.”

The SEC, Big Ten, Big 12 and ACC have all grown in size in the last five years, and the Pac-12 is on track to reform soon. The updated conference structures make it more difficult for middling teams to compete well enough to make the cut, even if they have the talent to do so.

The biggest change in the March Madness 76-team structure would come in the opening round, currently known as the First Four. Those four games would expand to 12, per Thamel, with 24 teams competing for a spot in the traditional 64-team field. The 12 additional teams would be part of that, and four other spots currently in the 64-team bracket would also compete in the opening round.

The current proposal would not change anything about the tournament from the Round of 64 to the National Championship Game.
