Maryland men’s basketball adds guard Michael McNair Jr. from transfer portal

Maryland men’s basketball’s 31.7% average on 3-point shots was 303rd-best in the country during the 2025-26 season, and of its shooters that had double-digit makes on the year, all but Andre Mills have hit the transfer portal.

The Terps were likely to most acutely feel the loss of microwave scorer Diggy Coit, a guard who could come off the bench and change the game in an instant when he got hot.

Head coach Buzz Williams has addressed that concern with the signing of guard Michael McNair Jr. The former Boston University guard, who comes to the Terps through the transfer portal with a year of eligibility remaining, was lethal from 3-point range last season.

McNair’s 44.4% 3-point percentage was the fifth-best mark by any player in the country last season. He shot an average of seven 3-pointers per game last season and made over three of them, finishing the year averaging 16.9 points per game.

Very few players from the Patriot League have transitioned well to the power conference level in recent seasons — the only one to do it at an elite level so far has been guard Cam Spencer. But if he can provide a solid bench option Williams can turn to when the Terps are in need of 3-point shooting, Maryland could end up satisfied.

With the signing of McNair, every spot of the Terps’ lineup appears to be taken. Below is a potential depth chart that illustrates the makeup of the current Maryland squad.
