UCLA men’s basketball receives commitment from Azavier Robinson

Mick Cronin added another promising young transfer Saturday when the UCLA men’s basketball coach received a commitment from Azavier Robinson.

The 6-foot-2 combo guard, whose freshman season at Butler was cut short by a wrist injury, brings plenty of intrigue with him to Westwood.

A consensus four-star prospect who broke top NBA draft pick Greg Oden’s scoring record at the same Indianapolis high school, Robinson started 15 of the 22 games he played in his first college season. He was averaging 6.1 points, 2.5 assists, 1.9 rebounds and 1.5 steals in 18.3 minutes per game when he suffered a left wrist injury that required surgery.

At the time of his injury, Robinson ranked in the top 10 in the Big East Conference in steals per game. He also made 13 of 30 3-pointers, an exceptional 43.3%.

Coaches and teammates call Robinson “Stink,” a nickname he was given by his mother when he was 3 months old.

Robinson becomes the latest transfer to arrive at UCLA with multiple seasons of remaining eligibility, joining guard Jaylen Petty and forwards Filip Jovic and Sergej Macura. Petty and Jovic will be sophomores next season, and Macura will be a junior.

The Bruins are still pursuing former Wisconsin shooting guard John Blackwell and former North Carolina State small forward Matt Able in addition to a starting-level center.

The team is bringing back center Xavier Booker, forwards Eric Dailey Jr. and Brandon Williams as well as guards Trent Perry and Eric Freeny. UCLA’s freshman class consists of forwards Javonte Floyd and Joe Philon.
