Oregon to host SJSU transfer guard Colby Garland on Sunday

One day after receiving news that former Kentucky combo guard Jasper Johnson decided to commit to the Oregon Ducks, Dana Altman and his staff are set to host San Jose State transfer point guard Colby Garland on Sunday in their continued search to find their next point guard. Sam Kayser first reported the news.

Garland had a strong 2025-26 campaign with the Spartans, leading the team in points (20.3), assists (4.6) and steals (1.1) on his way to being named to the Mountain West Conference Third Team. He scored 42 points and dished out 10 assists combined in two MWC tournament games.

The lefty point guard began his career at Drake, where he contributed off the bench as a freshman. He then transferred to Longwood, averaging just over 12 points and four assists per game. The Arkansas native blossomed into a star as a junior at San Jose State, finishing second in the conference in scoring despite commanding the opponents’ top defender.

Having already landed the commitments of Johnson, San Francisco forward Tyrone Riley, Boise State forward Andrew Meadow and San Diego State’s Pharaoh Compton, Garland’s visit is paramount towards potentially adding another piece to the puzzle at a ball-handling position.

Jackson Shelstad left a significant vacancy at that spot when he entered the transfer portal, and the Ducks struck out on Hofstra Pride transfer point guard Preston Edmead on Saturday, who committed to NC State just days after visiting Eugene. Garland would be a tremendous consolation prize, as he brings a strong resume of experience and production.

Garland has just one season of eligibility remaining, making his potential commitment a short-term solution to the Ducks’ point guard position — yet a needed one, as the current roster is bereft of a primary ball-handler.
