D.J. Wagner wasn’t even supposed to still be in college right now.

The former five-star recruit was meant to spend one season with the Kentucky Wildcats and then go to the NBA.

Instead, he’s on his third college basketball team now. He committed to transfer to Maryland on Saturday.

D.J. Wagner timeline

Wagner was one of the best recruits in the country when he headed to Kentucky to try and be a Wildcats star.

He put up 9.9 points and 3.3 assists per game as a college freshman, and he chose to stick around the NCAA ranks.

When head coach John Calipari left the Wildcats for Arkansas, Wagner followed.

This season with the Razorbacks, Wagner had to contend with two high-end guards besides him. He averaged 7.4 points and 2.4 assists per game.

Wagner is an immense talent, but he also hasn’t quite found his way, and that’s what brings him to Maryland.

The season at Maryland will be the last one Wagner plays in college.

If he can lead the Terrapins to strong heights, maybe he can still rekindle the NBA interest that once existed in him — at least a little bit.
