Marquette basketball delivered some highlight moments on the floor, notably Nigel James’ wicked dunk versus Georgetown. But the Golden Eagles now pulled off their first offseason win: Landing a prized Louisville transfer.

The Big East program reeled in Sananda Fru Wednesday, with Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress confirming the arrival. College basketball analytics expert Evan Miyakawa liking the move.

“He is the best player in the entire portal at finishing inside the arc, and is an elite offensive rebounder and rim protector,” Miyakawa said via the social media website X, formerly Twitter.

Fru hands Marquette a massive need via the College Basketball Transfer Portal. The Golden Eagles fell to eighth overall among Big East teams in total defense. Marquette was worse in blocked shots, ranking ninth with executing 97 swats. They also earned the same ranking in defensive rebounds (740 total).

Fru’s addition rises as the first attempt into correcting this major flaw. The 6-foot-11 German played like he lives in the paint. But handed UL a dominating presence down low.

Fru showed no hesitation when attacking the paint and threw the ball down fiercely.

He averaged 9.0 points per game with 6.1 rebounds playing for Pat Kelsey. Fru produced 17 games of surpassing the double-digit mark for scoring.

Some of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s bests witnessed his wrath in the paint. Fru blocked three shots against Miami during the ACC Tournament, plus delivered another three-block game against North Carolina. He even swatted Duke for two blocks in the Jan. 26 contest.

Marquette endured its worst season under head coach Shaka Smart at 12-20, which ended its four-season streak of making March Madness.
