Darryn Peterson and the Kansas Jayhawks did not end the 2025-26 college basketball season how they had hoped. After falling short in the Big 12 Tournament and finishing with a 23-10 regular-season record, Kansas earned the No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament. But its March Madness journey ended in the opening weekend, suffering a second-round loss to St. John’s.
While the Jayhawks may have fallen short of expectations, Peterson did not. The freshman guard averaged 20.2 points on 43.8% shooting, 4.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. Peterson now likely heads to the NBA, where he is widely projected as a top-three pick in the 2026 draft. But he isn’t the only player the Jayhawks will be without going forward.

Jamari McDowell, a 6-foot-5 guard out of Manvel High School (Manvel, Texas), was a four-star prospect in the class of 2023 (247 Sports). He ranked as the 88th-best overall player in his respective class, along with the 14th-best shooting guard and the 6th-best from the state of Texas.
McDowell has spent the last three years with Bill Self and Kansas, choosing to redshirt during the 2024-25 season. And this past season, he earned himself significant playing time, appearing in 35 games and averaging 3.3 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 17.2 minutes per game. But following the NCAA Tournament, McDowell chose to enter the NCAA transfer portal, potentially looking for more court time.

And on Wednesday, McDowell took to social media to reveal that he has committed to join Steve Forbes and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
“Overly blessed ❕,” McDowell wrote on Instagram with a photo of himself in Wake Forest gear.
Peterson appeared to give his blessing on his Kansas teammate’s decision, leaving a comment on McDowell’s post: “ouuuuuu.”
