Rick Pitino and the St. John’s Red Storm did not finish the 2025-26 college basketball season on the high note they were hoping for. After winning the Big East tournament, they entered the NCAA Tournament as the No. 5 seed in the East Region. However, the Red Storm were eliminated in the Sweet 16 by the No. 1 Duke Blue Devils.
Even after falling short of a national championship, their losses have continued to pile up. The offseason has provided Pitino and his staff with a lot of work to do, including in the transfer portal. Since it officially opened on April 7, St. John’s has had three players depart.

The latest departure came on Tuesday. On3’s Pete Nakos reported that Red Storm guard Dylan Darling will be entering the transfer portal.
Darling wrapped up his first season with St. John’s after transferring from the Idaho State Bengals. He appeared in 35 games and made 15 starts, averaging 6.9 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists. He also shot 39.8% from the field and 27.7% from the three-point line.
Originally beginning his career with the Washington State Cougars, the guard was an unranked prospect coming out of the 2022 cycle, according to Rivals Industry Rankings. He joined the Bengals after two seasons with the Cougars.

His 2024-25 season with Idaho State was certainly his most productive. Darling averaged 19.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game, but failed to deliver the same production with St. John’s.
However, he was still an effective piece and even had the fifth most minutes per game (21.3) for anyone on the Red Storm. With one more year of eligibility, Darling is seeking a fourth program to play for in five years.
Meanwhile, St. John’s has yet to replenish any talent that left through the portal. Pitino and his staff have not landed any transfer additions so far this offseason.
