Grant Hill recalls how Mike Krzyzewski prepared Duke against UNLV at the very start of the 1991 season: “We practiced five against seven”

The story of Duke’s 1991 national championship run remains one of the most iconic in NCAA history, thanks to the talent and grit the team possessed and the way it initiated one of the hardest-fought revenge arcs in college basketball history.

A year earlier, they were humiliated on the biggest stage by UNLV, losing by 30 points in the 1990 final. That defeat left a bitter taste in every Duke fan and player. None more so than, at that time, a young incoming freshman named Grant Hill.

The loss was so shocking that it made Hill, who had already committed to Duke at that point, question whether he really wanted to be a Blue Devil.

“I remember I was at my high school teammates’ house watching that championship game and I’m thinking like, ‘Did I pick the right school?’ Like it was embarrassing,” he admitted.

But what followed that disastrous loss was a masterclass in leadership and preparation by arguably the most legendary coach in college basketball history, Mike Krzyzewski, who turned that humiliation into motivation and built one of the most mentally prepared and equally talented teams in NCAA history.

Revenge circled at the very beginning

The Rebels at that point were loaded with future NBA players such as Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon and Greg Anthony. UNLV played with unmatched speed, athleticism and most of all, swagger. Their pressure-heavy Amoeba defense overwhelmed opponents and their 103-73 blowout of Duke in the 1999 championship game cemented their place as one of the most dominant teams in the NCAA and made them the favorites to repeat in 1992.

Even Hill, arriving as a freshman, couldn’t initially see how Duke could beat the powerhouse. But Coach K could. And he emphasized that during the very first day of the 1991 season.

“And so the first day my freshman year, Coach K put on the board, ‘1991 national champs,’  And circles it. And I’m thinking, ‘Does he not know that Vegas has everybody back?’ I didn’t see it. I didn’t believe it,”…
