Former UNC basketball guard finds new home

The North Carolina Tar Heels are still putting together their roster for the 2026-27 college basketball season under Mike Malone. With the transfer portal being open for six days, UNC landed its first commitment on Monday afternoon and then received the news that Jarin Stevenson is also returning.

But hours later, another roster move that isn’t good news popped up.

Per Jonathan Givony, point guard Derek Dixon has committed to Arizona out of the transfer portal and is leaving UNC after one season. Dixon entered the portal last week with the coaching change and quickly had a visit to Arizona scheduled.

From there, Tommy Lloyd and the Wildcats sealed the deal to get their new point guard.

In his lone season with the Tar Heels, Dixon averaged 6.5 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists. He entered the year as the backup point guard before taking over as the starter. He ended up starting 16 games this season.
