Former Notre Dame rising guard Cole Certa finds new home at ACC rival

Notre Dame continues to try to attract talent to their basketball team while former players are settling in on their next destinations.

Cole Certa, the 6-foot, 4-inch sophomore guard from Bloomington, Illinois, announced that he will be playing basketball at ACC rival Clemson next season. Cole showed flashes of scoring potential in South Bend. He appeared in 31 games and averaged 12.8 points while shooting better than 36-percent from three-point range. Known for his perimeter shooting and confidence off the bench, Certa was expected to play a larger role next season before entering the transfer portal in early April.

Certa’s defection is just one of many that head coach Micah Shrewsberry has to deal with this offseason as he tries to rehaul the Notre Dame roster. Certa was thought to be the future of Notre Dame basketball with Jalen Haralson, but he’s also entered his name in the transfer portal and now the Irish are scrambling to figure out what their identity will be both in the near future and far.

Clemson finished 12-6 in ACC play this past year and 24-11 overall with a postseason loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Notre Dame finished 13-18 overall this past season missing the opportunity to play in the NCAA tournament. There have been whispers for Shrewsberry’s job but as of now it looks like he is still entrusted to right the ship. But a big rebound season will be expected of the basketball team.
