North Carolina eyeing versatile combo guard in transfer portal

North Carolina has reached out to former Monmouth combo guard Jason Rivera-Torres, according to Sam Kayser of LeagueReady.

The 6-7 guard has had more than a dozen schools reach out to him, most notably Alabama, Boston College, Kentucky, NC State, SMU, UCLA, Villanova, Wake Forest and West Virginia. He is the No. 187 prospect and No. 37 shooting guard in 247Sports’ transfer rankings.

This past season, he averaged 15.8 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists and was an All-CAA selection. He also averaged 2.1 steals and 1.1 blocks per game, earning a spot on the All-Defensive team. He shot 40.1% from the field and made 31% of his 3-point attempts. However, he is an excellent free-throw shooter, converting 81% from the line.

As a sophomore at San Francisco in 2024-25, he appeared in 33 games off the bench and averaged 2.4 points and 2.3 rebounds in 7.8 minutes per game. The previous season, he played in 29 games with two starts as a freshman at Vanderbilt, averaging 15.4 minutes, 6.4 points and 3.1 rebounds.

Rivera-Torres’ length, athleticism and versatility could benefit the Tar Heels, considering how much they struggled last season, especially on the perimeter.
