Kentucky Wildcats News: Who will be the next UK Basketball point guard?

As Kentucky looks ahead to next basketball season, one of the biggest lingering questions is who will be the point guard when the Wildcats take the floor next fall?

When building next year’s roster, landing a high-level point guard is important. Kentucky has looked at several options, but who will be leading the Wildcats offense?

When the portal first opened, many believed Kentucky was going to make a heavy push for Dedan Thomas Jr., who played at LSU last season and UNLV the year before. However, things didn’t work out and Thomas ultimately committed to Houston.

A lot of focus remains on Zoom Diallo, the Washington guard who visited Kentucky this weekend. Diallo brings size to the point guard position, standing at about 6’4 and had a productive season at Washington, averaging just under 16 points per game to go along with about 4 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.

Shooting is a bit of a concern with Diallo, as he shot 31.5 percent from three this past season. For a team that needs to find some shooters in the portal, that could potentially be a cause for concern. However, Diallo did improve his shooting percentage as a sophomore after shooting just 18.2 percent from deep as a freshman.

Kentucky also is heavily involved with Rob Wright, who transferred to BYU this past season after playing at Baylor. At BYU, Wright was 6th in the Big 12 in scoring at 18.1 points per game to go along with 3.5 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game while shooting 46.7 percent from the floor and 41 percent from three.

To put it simple, Kentucky needs to really hit on the point guard position in the portal. It’s a position Kentucky really struggled in last season, particularly early with Jaland Lowe out and while Denzel Aberdeen really improved in that role over the course of the season, Kentucky’s lack of a backup really limited the team.

Who do you hope to see Mark Pope and Co. land at the point guard spot?
