Washington basketball eyeing stout Wright State defender

With freshman guard Courtland Muldrew in the transfer portal, Danny Sprinkle and the Washington Huskies are looking for a top-flight defender to add to their rotation in the backcourt

According to a report from Recruits Zone’s Blake Smith, Washington is one of several high-major programs in contact with Wright State standout TJ Burch, who proved to be one of the nation’s best defenders after averaging 2.6 steals per game with the Raiders last season.

Burch, who averaged 12.8 points, 3.6 assists, and 2.4 rebounds per game across 34 games and 23 starts as a sophomore, has also heard from BYU, Central Florida, Kansas State, Missouri, and Seton Hall, among others. As the Huskies look to add some threatening three-point shooters, Burch wasn’t necessarily elite in that category at Wright State, converting on 34.3 percent of his looks, but he proved that he can be relied on in big moments.

In the Horizon League championship game, a 66-63 win over Detroit Mercy, Burch led the Raiders with 19 points and added 3 assists, 2 rebounds, a steal, and a block to give his team an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. There, despite an 83-72 loss to the Virginia Cavaliers, he starred.

Burch posted 15 points and 6 assists, adding 5 steals in the contest, proving that he can hang at a higher level of competition.

If he were to wind up with the Huskies, he would be part of a completely re-tooled backcourt that has seen Muldrew and fellow freshman JJ Mandaquit, along with sophomore star Zoom Diallo, all enter the transfer portal. With junior guard Wesley Yates as the one surefire part of the rotation, Washington should be expected to take a long look at Burch.
