Trey McKenney makes return to Michigan basketball official

Michigan basketball is wasting no time locking in its roster for its defense of the 2026 NCAA Tournament championship, even before it finishes celebrating that title.

Guard Trey McKenney is the latest Wolverine to return to the fold, as he agreed to a deal to run it back in Ann Arbor for his sophomore season on Friday, April 10, the Free Press confirmed.

Michigan guard Trey McKenney (1) celebrates a 3-pointer against Wisconsin during the first half of Big Ten Tournament semifinal at United Center in Chicago on Saturday, March 14, 2026.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Jeff Borzello were the first to report the official deal.

McKenney’s return is little surprise, however, as the 2025 Mr. Basketball winner already told the Free Press he would be returning for a second season in maize and blue.

The deal follows a busy Thursday in which the Wolverines locked up a return for starting point guard Elliot Cadeau and got a commitment from former Tennessee big J.P. Estrella.

U-M is also hosting top-5 transfer prospect Juke Harris over the weekend.

With Cadeau and now McKenney back in the fold, the Wolverines will be returning the key pieces of their backcourt. There are still minutes to fill, however, with Nimari Burnett and Roddy Gayle Jr. out of eligibility and super-sub L.J. Cason set to redshirt in 2026-27 as he rehabs his knee after tearing an ACL in late February.

But his signature play for the Wolverines was his 3-pointer from the right wing with less than two minutes to play in Monday’s national championship victory over Connecticut
