The Kentucky Wildcats and Mark Pope have struggled to land recruits in the 2026 class. They did land point guard Mason Williams recently, and were hoping to land top overall player Tyran Stokes and G league guard Dink Pate. However, when Jason Hart left, it made getting either less likely, and on Thursday, Pate confirmed that by committing to Providence.
ESPN’s Jeff Borzello reported the decision, which shouldn’t come as a surprise to Kentucky fans. His biggest connection to the Wildcats program was Hart, who left to join SMU. Pate was still set to meet with Pope, but decided to go ahead and choose Providence instead.

There are questions about whether or not Pate will be eligible to play college basketball. He elected to bypass college, and once he did, his eligibility ended. However, a recent wave of players were allowed to return to college, opening the door for Pate. The NCAA is almost certain to try and close that option, though, which would render Pate ineligible once again.
Still, it’s another recruiting loss for Pope desperately needs some positive news. For now, Kentucky will continue to recruit Stokes and be very active in the transfer portal. It’s a key offseason for Pope, and every player counts at this point.
