Michigan basketball will attract a new crop of recruits and transfers after winning the national title over UConn. The win snapped a 37-year title dry spell on the hardwood and already won over one transfer.

The Wolverines jumped right into reload mode Thursday. Prized transfer from Tennessee J.P. Estrella arrives now to boost the frontcourt. Estrella’s arrival hands head coach Dusty May early peace in knowing he’s got the replacement for Morez Johnson or Yaxel Lendeborg lined up.

But the champion coach still has other areas to fill. May has plenty to choose from with more than 1,000 players entering the 2026 College Basketball Transfer Portal.

This transfer ignites repeat chatter in Ann Arbor if brought over, though.

Swooping up former Alabama forward Aiden Sherrell boosts the front court further.

Sherrell officially dipped into the portal Thursday amid rumors of a pending departure. He’s leaving Tuscaloosa and past Final Four head coach Nate Oats with career-best numbers: 11.1 points per game, 6.2 rebounds and 2.2 blocks.

Michigan rose as one to watch already for Sherrell, according to college basketball insider for On3/Rivals Joe Tipton.

“Sources tell On3 that schools like LSU, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State and Missouri are among the schools to monitor,” Tipton wrote. “However, that list will continue to grow in the coming days.”

That means May and Michigan must pursue the Detroit native Sherrell now.

How Alabama departure fits Michigan

Tipton believes Michigan adding Sherrell will make the Wolverines hesitant about going after Sherrell. The Wolverines even have four-star power forward signing Quinn Costello of Boston leading the nation’s top-ranked recruiting class for 2026.
