Former Kentucky target Alvaro Folgueiras could leave Iowa to enter transfer portal

A former Kentucky Basketball transfer portal target and one of the heroes from this year’s NCAA Tournament could be entering the transfer portal.

Alvaro Folgueiras made national headlines last month when he knocked down a 3-pointer in one of the biggest upsets of the tournament, as the 9-seed Iowa Hawkeyes defeated the defending national champion and 1-seed Florida Gators.

But now, it seems Folgueiras might be hitting the market again.

On3’s Pete Nakos is reporting that there is a belief Folgueiras might not return to Iowa next season and would be taking a pay cut if he did so.

“Sources have said they would be surprised if he is back for another year in Iowa City,” Nakos said of Folgueiras. “The Hawkeyes had a team workout earlier this week that Folgueiras did not attend, per a source. The two sides are expected to meet again on Wednesday.”

If Folgueiras enters the portal, he will likely draw significant interest from top programs across the country. Last season at Iowa, the 6-10 forward averaged 8.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 50% from the floor, 33% from 3-point range, and 76.7% from the free-throw line.

He scored 14 points each in wins over Clemson and Florida in the NCAA Tournament, and 16 against Nebraska in the Sweet 16 game.

Before making his way to Iowa, Folgueiras was a standout at Robert Morris, earning Horizon League Player of the Year by averaging 14 points and 9 rebounds per game.

When he entered the portal the first time, Kentucky was one of the top contenders before landing Andrija Jelavic and learning Brandon Garrison would return, leaving Folgueiras to ultimately land at Iowa.

This one will be worth watching if he enters the portal this offseason.
