DJ Wagner rose as a coveted transfer two years ago after leaving Kentucky. Wagner then followed John Calipari to Arkansas. He’s back in the NCAA College Basketball Transfer Portal as of Monday, though.

Wagner also enters a familiar territory: Becoming a highly-wanted talent. Only this time it appears he and Calipari won’t be a pairing moving forward.

Wagner testing the portal waters once again will garner even more teams, including the ones envisioning a Final Four/National Championship game run.

The New Jersey native took a dip in scoring production, however, by dipping to 7.4 this season. He hit 11.2 the previous season during his Razorbacks debut of 2024-25.

McNamara brings his own guard background that makes him relatable to Wagner. He starred in the backcourt when a young Carmelo Anthony was on the campus.

Syracuse already is losing three guards to either graduation or by seeking a new college home. The 42-year-old head coach gets a cleaner slate to work with. Adding Wagner can boost fan intrigue, plus show how serious McNamara is with reigniting fan interest for the Orange.

Such a move likely won’t sit well with Calipari, given his past rivalry with Rick Pitino. But at least Calipari won’t face Wagner twice a year if his guard jumps to the Big East.
