With the North Carolina basketball team’s new head coach being Michael Malone, in what was a shocking bit of news for the sports world, he looks to bring his winning ways from the NBA to the collegiate level. As Malone expressed being proud to be with the North Carolina basketball program, he would give insight into the thought process before taking the job.

Malone spoke on Tuesday in his introductory press conference, explaining why he chose to take a college basketball job, rather than having a chance to go back to the NBA, where he won a championship in 2023 with the Denver Nuggets. He would say how the Tar Heels’ job is bigger than himself and how it would’ve been the only one he considered.

“It’s a great day to be a Tar Heel. Really thankful for this opportunity,” Malone said, via ACC Network. “I do not take it lightly, and people keep asking me, ‘Coach, why would you leave a chance of coaching in the NBA again?… It wasn’t an easy decision, but what I kept thinking about was, ‘I have a chance to be a part of something special, the history, tradition, to be a part of something much bigger than myself.’ This was the only college job I’d ever consider. Any other job, I wouldn’t even answer the phone.”

Malone would also speak about wanting to improve each year and have sustained success. It remains to be seen if he achieves that as the North Carolina basketball team looks to further improve under Malone after a 24-9 record.
