Johnny Jones announced his departure as head men’s basketball coach at Texas Southern University in a letter posted to his social media accounts on Tuesday evening. This comes as speculation has festered over whether he’d be hired to join Will Wade’s coaching staff at LSU. This makes Wade the third head coach to depart the SWAC to become an assistant coach at an FBS institution.

The letter is below:

“Grateful. 🙏

After eight incredible years here at Texas Southern University, I want to sincerely thank the administration, our athletics department, our student-athletes, and the entire community for your unwavering support.

It has been an honor to serve as your men’s basketball coach and be part of something truly special. The relationships built, the challenges faced, and the memories created will stay with me forever.

I will always cherish our time together.

Wishing TSU continued success as the program moves forward and continues to flourish. I’m excited for what lies ahead.

Johnny Jones has spent more than three decades working in college basketball, holding coaching roles at programs such as Memphis Tigers men’s basketball, Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball, North Texas Mean Green men’s basketball, LSU Tigers men’s basketball, Nevada Wolf Pack men’s basketball, and Texas Southern Tigers men’s basketball over a 34-year career.

A former player at Louisiana State University from 1980 to 1984, Jones later returned to lead the program as head coach from 2012 to 2017. He took over at Texas Southern in 2018 and quickly found success in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, guiding the Tigers to three consecutive SWAC Tournament championships and multiple appearances in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament.
