Monday night, Michigan captured the 2026 NCAA championship with a gritty display of tough-minded basketball. They needed every bit of it, because UConn matched them stride for stride in hard-nosed intensity. It wasn’t a pretty game, but it was hugely impressive.
The NCAA tournament began 87 years ago, and over the decades it has featured some of basketball’s most brilliant players: Lew Alcindor (now known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar), Bill Walton, David Thompson, Christian Laettner, Patrick Ewing, and countless others. Yet one of the greatest delivered his final college performance 69 years ago—a game for the ages. In 1957, Bill Russell posted a staggering 26 points, 27 rebounds, and 20 blocks to lead San Francisco past Iowa, 83-71.

The game has changed enormously since 1956—most obviously because of Russell, who revolutionized the center position. Even so, his fierce competitive desire would still stand out in any era of basketball.
