Troy Henderson enters transfer portal

Yet another player on the Tennessee basketball roster has entered the transfer portal. Troy Henderson, who flashed in spots as a freshman in Knoxville, will look for new opportunities in the portal. He joins fellow freshman guard Clarence Massamba in the portal, who announced his decision this morning.

Henderson was a late find for Rick Barnes in last year’s cycle. Tennessee gave him his first and only big-time offer, and Henderson jumped on it. The 6-1 point guard was a 3-star prospect in the class, ranking as the 27th point guard, according to 247Sports.

The Richmond, Virginia native ended the year averaging 1.8 points and one assist per game. There was a time where Henderson appeared to crack the rotation, but a shoulder injury brought that progress to a halt. His best game of the season came against Texas A&M, where he played 22 minutes and scored eight points. Without his two clutch three-pointers, Tennessee doesn’t win that game.

Henderson suffered a shoulder injury during the next game against Kentucky.

Tennessee appeared to have a nice, long-term prospect here, but he’ll look for new immediate opportunities instead. It’s yet another example of how nearly impossible it is to have a four-year player in this era of college basketball.

Tennessee already had big needs all over the roster, now you can pretty much say they just need additions everywhere. They’ll obviously need a point guard to start, with Ja’Kobi Gillespie out of the picture. Now they’ll need a handful of guys at guard for depth, along with the task of completely remaking the frontcourt.

The transfer portal officially opens on Tuesday.
