Could Michigan State basketball open the 2026-27 season as the top ranked team in the country? One notable college basketball analyst believes that is the case as things currently stand.
National college basketball analyst Seth Davis released his “way-too-early” preseason rankings for next year, with the Spartans coming in as the No. 1 team. Davis noted, however, that his rankings will be fluid over the next few weeks and months depending on the action within the transfer portal.

Here’s what Davis had to say about the Spartans:
“Fears could start the season as the Preseason National Player of the Year, and a little more offensive improvement from Carr could make a huge difference. Tom Izzo usually brings in freshmen who stay and develop, so this is an unusually strong class for him. Glenn transferred last year from FAU but suffered a season-ending knee injury during summer workouts.”
From the Big Ten, Davis had Illinois (No. 2), Michigan (No. 4), Wisconsin (No. 17), Ohio State (No. 18), Purdue (No. 20), Nebraska (No. 21) and Iowa (No. 22) included in his rankings. Michigan State has known non-conference matchups against three other teams in the top 10 as well: Duke (No. 3), Gonzaga (No. 5) and Arkansas (No. 6).
I wrote last week how I was personally high on the Spartans heading into the offseason and felt Michigan State was going to be a preseason top 10 (maybe top 5) team. I didn’t, though, think they’d be considered a preseason No. 1 team so this personally caught me by surprise to see. There is a lot of roster movement that’s about to take place via the portal, but this is definitely a positive sign for the future of Michigan State hoops.
