The opening of the transfer portal is here, and the Kentucky Wildcats are set to be active in pursuing players looking for fresh starts. A veteran point guard is something Mark Pope is looking for, and former LSU guard Dedan Thomas Jr. is one of their current targets, per Kentucky Sports Radio.
Thomas was a top 50 player in the 2023 recruiting class, and enrolled at UNLV over offers from Arizona, Houston, Gonzaga, and others. He instantly became an impact player, averaging 13 points and 5 assists as a freshman. After two seasons as an All-MWC player, he entered the transfer portal. Kentucky contacted him, but he would wind up with LSU instead, where he averaged 15.3 points and 6.5 assists per game last year.

Signing Thomas does come with risk. He missed almost half the season with a broken foot, and that’s bound to give Kentucky coaches and fans pause after two straight years of injury issues at point guard.
Still, there’s no doubting that on the court, Thomas is everything the Wildcats need. He’s a terrific passer, but can score when necessary, though he’s not a great three-point shooter.
We will continue to update this story, as well as monitor all the transfer portal news.
