Former Tar Heel earns Final Four Most Outstanding Player honors

The 2024-25 UNC men’s basketball season was filled with unknowns and underperformance. One particular Tar Heel who never lived up to his billing was Elliot Cadeau.

Now in Ann Arbor, Cadeau is thriving as Michigan’s starting point guard, averaging a career-high 10.3 points per game.

Late Monday night, Cadeau just reached the pinnacle of every young basketball player’s collegiate career. A year after his divorce with North Carolina, Cadeau earned Men’s Final Four Most Outstanding Player honors.

Cadeau, who just capped his junior campaign by leading the Wolverines to their first NCAA Championship since 1989, saved two of his best performances for the Final Four.

In Michigan’s National Title-clinching victory, Cadeau tied his season-high with 19 points, making five shots from the field and eight free throws.

During the Wolverines’ 91-73 victory over Arizona on Saturday night, Cadeau recorded his third double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and dishing out 10 assists.

UNC had National Championship aspirations upon landing a commitment from Cadeau, who proved himself as an elite high school prospect from Link Academy in Branson, Mo. Cadeau gave the Tar Heels an aggressive, past-first point guard, but mistakes and not living up to previous hype defined his career in Carolina Blue.

As much as you want guys to thrive at North Carolina, sometimes they just need a change of scenery. Cadeau needed exactly that – and he’s now a National Champion.

If Cadeau stayed in Chapel Hill last season, would he still be hoisting a trophy? There’s no telling, but given Michigan’s depth and good health, the answer is likely no.
