The Oklahoma men’s basketball team may soon have a general manager.
OU is reportedly set to hire Lucas McKay, currently the Clemson GM. He helped create the roster for Tigers teams that have made three straight NCAA Tournaments, including an Elite Eight appearance in 2024.

Oklahoma had previously hired NBA guard Trae Young as assistant general manager in March. But as he’s rather busy in his day job, the position largely serves as a face spot. A general manager by title would likely run point on the finances of OU basketball’s roster construction.
The Sooners have languished in the SEC when it comes to NIL spending in basketball.
“Candidly, we’re not resourced as the level that we need to be resourced,” athletic director Roger Denny told “The Oklahoman” in March.
OU basketball looked disastrous to start conference play this season, losing nine games in a row en route to a 1-9 start. A 6-2 finish to the regular season and two wins in the SEC Tournament saw the Sooners land on the NCAA Tournament bubble, but it burst upon losing to Arkansas in the postseason, ending the season.

Coach Porter Moser held on to his job in large part thanks to that finish. Recently, he sounded positive about the direction the program was headed.
“(Denny) has made it really clear that we have to up the resources put into men’s basketball and I really appreciated that,” Moser said. “I know he comes from Illinois and that program – basketball program – the investment made.”
McKay’s hiring had not yet been finalized as of Saturday night. Oklahoma will play West Virginia in the finals of the College Basketball Crown tournament on Sunday.
