Charles Barkley is not easing into his Final Four prediction. The Hall of Famer went all in on the Illinois Fighting Illini ahead of Saturday’s showdown with the UConn Huskies, and he made it clear he does not expect much drama.

“I love Illinois in this game,” Charles Barkley said. “I think their size is gonna bother Connecticut. And I’ll be honest with you. I don’t think it’s gonna be a close game. I think Illinois is gonna beat ’em pretty good.”
That kind of confidence reflects what Illinois has shown all tournament. The Illini have rolled through the bracket with four double-digit wins, using their length, rebounding, and defensive pressure to control games from start to finish. Freshman guard Keaton Wagler has been at the center of it, producing at a star level while setting the tone offensively.
Barkley’s argument is simple. If Illinois dictates the physicality and tempo, UConn could be forced out of its comfort zone.
UConn’s Championship Pedigree Still Looms
Still, picking against UConn comes with risk. The Huskies are battle-tested, fresh off a one-point win over Duke in the Elite Eight, and they have already beaten Illinois earlier this season. That experience, paired with their ability to execute in tight moments, is why many still lean their direction.

But Barkley is not one of them. His prediction leans fully into what Illinois has become in March. A confident, connected team that has not just won, but controlled games.
Saturday night in Indianapolis will decide whether that belief holds up.
