The Syracuse Orange men’s basketball roster will likely look rather different next season from this one.

That’s the nature of modern college basketball, especially when there’s a coaching change. Adrian Autry is out and Gerry McNamara is in, which means the transfer portal comes to the forefront.
SU knows at least one of its potential returners who won’t be back.
On3’s Joe Tipton reported on Friday that Tyler Betsey plans to enter the transfer portal.
Betsey is a 6-foot-8 forward who was a top-50 recruit in the Class of 2024.
He spent his first season playing for the University of Cincinnati, and he averaged just 11 minutes per game there.
Betsey came to Syracuse in pursuit of more opportunity, and he got it to an extent.

The sharpshooter averaged 18 minutes per game, putting in 6.7 points and averaging 2.8 rebounds per contest.
The biggest part of Betsey’s game is his quick-release outside shot. He shot 40.7% from 3-point range this season for Syracuse, averaging 1.6 makes per game on 4.0 attempts per game from beyond the arc.
While the sample was smaller at Cincinnati, Betsey has taken a much higher volume of 3s compared to 2s in his college career. Whoever goes after him will be looking for someone who can space the floor and knock down those outside shots when they arrive.
It makes sense for Betsey to try something new, because the new faces brought in by McNamara would have the potential to overtake a returning player who G-Mac never recruited.

It does hurt a bit in the end that Syracuse couldn’t figure out a way to use Betsey more, though. With his shooting talent, he probably could’ve been a bigger contributor.
