Yes, the Wolverines have one national championship in their history. Michigan’s lone title came in 1989 under interim head coach Steve Fisher. The Wolverines had started the season with Bill Frieder as head coach, but shortly before the 1989 NCAA Tournament, Frieder announced that he would be leaving and taking the opening at Arizona State.

Michigan athletic director Bo Schembechler mandated that Frieder leave immediately, and proceeded to name Fisher the interim head coach. The Wolverines were awarded a No. 3 seed in the 1989 NCAA Tournament. They beat No. 14 Xavier, No. 11 South Alabama, No. 2 North Carolina and No. 5 Virginia to reach the Final Four.
