Illinois has never won a National Championship despite making the Final Four five different times. In fact, the Fighting Illini have only played in the National Championship game once in its history, a loss to North Carolina in 2005.

Illinois’ Final Four appearances came in 1949, 1951, 1952, 1989 and 2005. In each of those first four appearances, Illinois lost the semifinal game, the first three coming under head coach Harry Combes and the 1989 loss coming with head coach Lou Henson.

The last time Illinois made the Final Four before 2026 was in 2005, when the team finished the season as the national runner-up. That year, the Fighting Illini were a No. 1 seed but had to erase a 15-point deficit against No. 3 Arizona in the Elite Eight to win the region.
