The NCAA Tournament really begins with the CBS intro music on Selection Sunday and ends with the 1980s melodramatic charm of “One Shining Moment.”
The song by David Barrett, written shortly before it first debuted as a grace note on the 1987 men’s basketball NCAA Tournament, has become a staple of April. The familiar tune serves as backdrop to a montage of video clips from the previous three weeks, a collection of highs and lows from that year’s tournament, played at the end of the championship broadcast after hardware has been handed out.

The three-minute segment serves as a perfect encapsulation of the tournament, a final bit of pomp on the champion’s coronation and a badge of honor for anybody who appears in the segment.
These are all the Wisconsin references that appear in the “One Shining Moment” segments, all available to see on YouTube. We must provide the caveat that some of the earlier segments lack modern video quality, so there’s a chance we missed one or two.
1991: Heartbreak for UW-Green Bay
