The North Carolina Tar Heels are looking for a new men’s basketball head coach after firing Hubert Davis. To this point, North Carolina hasn’t made much movement amid rumors that it could be looking to hire Arizona Wildcats head coach Tommy Lloyd or Michigan Wolverines head coach Dusty May. However, it doesn’t appear that May will be leaving Michigan soon.
May’s reps and Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel are working on a contract extension, and talks are trending positively, as reported by on3’s John Henschke. There is hope that a new contract for May and Michigan can be announced “as soon as possible.”

Earlier in the week ahead of the Final Four, Manuel said his goal is to ensure that May will spend the rest of his coaching career with the Wolverines. In February 2025, May and Michigan agreed to a new contract extension, keeping him in Ann Arbor through the 2029-2030 college basketball season.
The 49-year-old head coach has earned a bump in pay after taking the Wolverines to the Final Four for the first time since the 2018 season. May has turned around the Wolverines’ basketball program after it regressed under the leadership of former Michigan coach Juwan Howard.
Plus, the Wolverines don’t want to lose May to a blue blood basketball program, such as North Carolina. The Michigan basketball program has thrived in May’s tenure, outperforming North Carolina in every aspect. May has built excellent basketball teams through recruiting and the transfer portal.
Michigan is playing to make the 2026 NCAA Men’s Basketball championship on Saturday night. While the rumors swirl over May’s future in Ann Arbor, the Wolverines are focused on making the title. Hopefully, it is the first of many with May.
