UNC basketball head coach job might not be as appealing as you think

The offseason is a popular time for coaching changes, especially in an ever-changing sport like college basketball. The UNC men’s basketball team, rich in history but lacking in recent performance, has perhaps the most attractive head coach opening.

Just five days after a 19-point collapse against VCU in its NCAA Tournament opener, North Carolina fired Hubert Davis after a 5-year stint in charge. The Tar Heels made a surprise appearance in the 2022 National Championship game, earned a 1-seed in the 2024 NCAA Tournament and won 20+ games each season with Davis in charge, but never lived up to the “Carolina Standard.”

Head coaches are also turning down the UNC opening, most recently Iowa State head coach TJ Otzelberger. That posses one question: do the Tar Heels still have a marquee opening?

A recent episode of Jeff Goodman’s “The Field of 68: After Dark” podcast reveals some crucial thoughts on this highly-debated topic.

“I think it’s just amazing to me that the Carolina job would fall that far,” former Wake Forest player and assistant coach Randolph Childress said. “I would have never thought that many coaches would say no to North Carolina…you can’t tell me you’re not going to that program. I think it’s hard because that’s the first time they’re going to go outside the family.”

“I don’t think that Carolina is used to the idea that being Carolina isn’t inherently better than being these other programs,” Rob Dauster said. “I think Carolina is adjusting to the idea that…being a Blue Blood is not inherently going to make you a more appealing job, it makes it so that you have the money to make it more appealing.”

Six NCAA Championships, six runner-up finishes, 21 Final Fours and 113 NBA Draft picks are pretty appealing, but the UNC brand is losing steam based on recent performance.
