Providence Friar Duncan Powell arrested on domestic disorderly charge

Duncan Powell, a Providence College men’s basketball player during the 2025-26 season, was arrested and charged early Sunday morning with domestic disorderly conduct, according to Cranston police records.

Powell, 23, of Providence, was arrested as a result of a disturbance at 1440 Plainfield Pike in Cranston at 2:44 a.m. on March 28. According to a WJAR report, Powell allegedly threatened his ex-girlfriend and her friends, and Cranston police were called.

WJAR reported Powell’s ex-girlfriend told police he had hit her earlier in the day, causing a bruise on her leg. A witness at the house said Powell had arrived earlier and threatened everyone on the premises.

Powell is scheduled for an arraignment Monday morning at a place and time to be determined. His vehicle was located a block from the scene of his arrest. WJAR said a Providence spokesperson had no comment when contacted about Powell’s arrest.

Powell played in 22 games and made five starts for the Friars last season, averaging 4.6 points and 3.0 rebounds. He spent previous time in college at North Carolina A&T, Sacramento State and Georgia Tech. Powell arrived at Providence via the transfer portal for a graduate year in 2025-26.

Powell suffered what former Friars coach Kim English described as a mouth injury early in the season, missing five games. He returned wearing a protective mask for a rivalry victory over Rhode Island and played double-digit minutes in 15 of Providence’s next 17 games. Powell enjoyed his best outing in a Jan. 16 home win over Creighton, collecting 10 points and seven rebounds.

Powell was suspended for three games after his hard foul incited a melee in a 79-69 home loss to St. John’s on Feb. 14. Powell made contact across the head of former Friars forward Bryce Hopkins early in the second half, and the Red Storm methodically erased what was a 40-39 deficit….
