After Duke’s 80-75 win over St. John’s in the Sweet 16 game on Friday night, the Blue Devils coach joined an elite club, which includes Dean Smith and Bobby Knight. Two legends of the sport who forever changed their respective programs.
With Scheyer’s third Elite Eight appearance, the trio are the only coaches in the last 60 years who’ve hit that mark before the age of 40. Despite having immense success over four decades of work, not even Coach K is on the list.
Duke took care of business in Washington, DC and sent Rick Pitino’s Red Storm team home with a heartbreaking loss. Isaiah Evans scored 25 points and Cameron Boozer had 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Blue Devils, who extended the nation’s longest active winning streak to 14.

This entire NCAA Tournament has featured close games with Duke surviving at the final horn. The win over St. John’s was the second single-digit victory, including a six-point scare against 16-seed Siena during the opening round.

Next up for Duke is an Elite Eight matchup with UConn. The two familiar foes have met in the tourney previously. The Blue Devils are 3-2 against the Huskies in the Big Dance, but recent success has been a weakness. They’ve lost the last two, including the 1999 title game.
