What to know about Michigan entering NCAA Tournament Sweet 16

On Friday night, the Alabama Crimson Tide will make their fourth consecutive Sweet 16 appearance, doing so with a matchup against the Michigan Wolverines.

One of college basketball’s top teams, the Wolverines have consistently ranked among the nation’s best throughout the 2025-26 season, and as a result, are a No. 1 seed in this year’s NCAA Tournament.

Since earning that No. 1 seed, Michigan has certainly looked the part as well, routing both No. 16 Howard and No. 9 Saint Louis in the first and second rounds, respectively. Michigan has scored at-least 95 points in both games also, and are now set to make their second Sweet 16 appearance in two seasons under head coach Dusty May.

Record: 33-3 overall (19-1 Big Ten)

NCAA Tournament Seed: No. 1 in Midwest Region

Michigan comes into Friday night’s matchup with an overall record of 33-3, which also included a 19-1 mark in Big Ten play to win the conference’s regular season title. The Wolverines were also a consensus top five ranked team nationally entering the NCAA Tournament, and have an impressive resume headlined by wins over Illinois, Purdue, Michigan State, and Gonzaga.
