UK Athletics streamlines NIL, prepares for bigger spending

Kentucky is taking steps to make managing athlete payments and outside funding more efficient, a move that could give the Wildcats a competitive edge in recruiting, according to Justin Williams of The Athletic.

The athletic department’s new system allows private dollars, sponsorships, and other revenue streams to be combined in one process, making it easier to distribute money to players and manage over-the-cap NIL deals.

The $20 million revenue-sharing cap, which limits what athletes can receive directly from the school, is now seen more as a baseline than a ceiling. Kentucky Football’s total roster budget for the 2026 season is expected to approach $25 million, while several men’s basketball players already have deals that exceed the cap for 2026-27.

Last season, Kentucky Basketball reportedly spent $22 million on its roster, though that was prior to the school’s expanded deal with JMI Sports, which now helps manage outside funding, sponsorships, and NIL distribution.

This approach could help Kentucky better compete for top talent in both football and basketball, especially as NIL deals and private funding play a growing role in college athletics. By streamlining payments and leveraging outside money, the Wildcats are positioning themselves to maximize resources and maintain a strong roster despite evolving NCAA rules.
