Kansas coach Bill Self denies retirement rumors despite not committing to return: ‘No news. Bad info.’

University of Kansas men’s basketball head coach Bill Self reportedly denied retirement rumors after the team’s 67-65 loss to St. John’s on Sunday, according to the Kansas City Star’s Gary Bedore.

“No news. All b.s. Bad info,” Self reportedly told the Kansas City Star in a text message.

While Self denied the rumors, he reportedly said that he had no timeframe to report a decision and had no further comment on the matter.

“No, I haven’t decided (on returning). I’ll get back and visit with family. I’ve had obviously some issues off the court health-wise. And that will be discussed. But I love what I do. I want to feel good while I’m doing it, though. We’ll get back and we’ll discuss that when we get back.”

Self, 63, has been the head coach of Kansas since 2003. He has faced speculation about a possible retirement after missing time since 2022 due to an irregular heartbeat issue. While Self was taken to the hospital and skipped the Colorado road trip in January after feeling under the weather, he reportedly said he’s “feeling as good as I’ve felt in a long time.”

“I don’t know about completely,” Self told reporters when asked if he was completely healthy. “But I’m feeling — I feel as good as I’ve felt in a long time. I’m not making any statements whatsoever. But every year … when you get to be doing it as long as I’ve done it, I look at it in five-year increments. Now I’m probably looking at it in more two-year increments, so to speak.”

Self is 634-167 overall and 299-91 in conference during his time at Kansas. He has also won two National Championships at Kansas, in 2008 and 2022. Self was also the head coach at Illinois, Tulsa and Oral Roberts before he joined the Jayhawks.
