UNC-Greensboro hires former Tar Heel as next head coach

The best time of year is here. For the next couple weeks, college basketball fans across the world will have their eyes glued to the NCAA Tournament.

The UNC men’s basketball team, which earned the South Region’s 6-seed, will battle 11-seed VCU on Thursday, March 19 at 6:50 p.m. in both team’s NCAA Tournament opener. The winner of this matchup will face either Illinois or Penn on Saturday.

While all the focus is currently on postseason basketball, a former Tar Heel (24-8, 12-6 ACC) just earned himself another coaching gig. On Wednesday, UNC-Greensboro hired Jerod Haase as its next head coach.

Haase, an assistant coach at North Carolina under Roy Williams from 2003-2012, was part of the 2005 and 2009 National Championship squads. With 255 wins under his belt, Haase proved himself as an attractive head coaching candidate.

Haase spent four years at UAB, leading the Blazers to their first NCAA Tournament win in a decade. Stanford hired Haase before its 2016-17 season, but success never came to fruition out west, with the Cardinal only making one postseason appearance (2017-18 NIT) under the former UNC assistant.

Two seasons out of coaching, the hope is Haase can guide UNC-Greensboro back to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2021.

Meanwhile, the Tar Heels will play in its second-straight NCAA Tournament, facing the red-hot Atlantic 10 Champion VCU Rams (24-7, 15-3 A-10) Thursday evening. North Carolina knows how to win games with injuries, so can Henri Veesaar, Seth Trimble lead a younger, deeper roster anchor in a deep postseason run?
