Roddie Anderson III and All Wright will transfer from Xavier

This is the nature of the college game at this point in time. A decade ago, the major concern was whether or not a guy who had the ability to transfer would think it was worth sitting out a season to find a different situation that might fit him (or his perception of himself) better. Half that time ago, everyone can move everywhere at every time; coaches had to re-recruit their own rosters in every offseason to keep things intact.

Now in the NIL era, there’s a very real consideration of market value in what is effectively unfettered free agency, and I think that’s the spanner in the works for both of these players. Neither of these players has the skill set to be the focal point of a competitive Big East team. Are they in a better situation to stay as a role player at Xavier, or is their earning potential higher as the focal point of a team a little farther down the pecking order?

Both of these guys apparently thought so. So it goes in the modern NCAA game. I had an okay relationship with my coach in college, but if someone had shown up with a check with a comma in it, I’d have sent him a postcard from wherever I ended up. It’s hard to blame either of these guys for doing the same.

I want to give a special shout to Roddie for being Loyal to the Soil in the wreckage left behind when Sean Miller slithered to Texas on the belly that God cursed his ancestor to ambulate on after tempting Eve. With exactly zero minutes every played in a Xavier uniform and with no connection to the incoming staff, he chose to stand on business when every other player on the roster jumped ship. He might not get his number retired, but real ones will never forget him.

Richard Pitino came to Xavier needing to restock. Having bridged the gap between an empty roster and his first opening day, he’s now tasked with repeating the trick in the days ahead.
