Although changes to the college basketball landscape have made things easier for the chalk in recent years, it doesn’t mean the higher seeds are auto-picks to win games over the next three weeks. We always have to be mindful of high-profile schools that might be ripe for picking off, and today we’ll discuss four signature programs (hitting on a 1, 2, 3 and 4 seed) that could fit that profile.

Florida, No. 1 seed (South)
The pros are always going to outweigh the cons with any No. 1 seed, but it’s fair to acknowledge the gap between Florida and the other three top-seeded clubs. Duke is currently the championship favorite (Bet MGM has them at +300), closely followed by Michigan (+350) and Arizona (+400). Florida is a mild step back at +650. So any discussion about the most vulnerable No. 1 seed has to start with the Gators.

Florida’s dominant frontcourt (the Gators were the second-best offensive rebounding team in the country) presents a plausible path to a repeat championship. But will the guard play be good enough? Florida ranks 161st in turnover percentage, and only made 30.8% of its 3-point attempts, a shockingly low rate for a powerhouse program.

Florida could also get tripped up by geography. The second week of the South Regional will be played at the Toyota Center in Houston. The No. 2 seed in the South is . . . the Houston Cougars. Gator fans will be quietly rooting against Houston from the tip of the tourney, hoping to avoid this nightmare draw. Houston isn’t merely a pedestrian team looking for some home cooking; it’s a legitimate title contender as well, ranked No. 5 in KenPom’s efficiency rankings.
Connecticut, No. 2 seed (East)
At first blush, it feels odd to be fading the Huskies, who have two championships this decade. The program hit a lull at the end of the Kevin Ollie era, but Dan Hurley…
