Look, the Kentucky Wildcats’ draw is far from easy. Santa Clara, in addition to making their first NCAA Tournament game since 1996, is no pushover. They have a really good team that does a lot of things well.
If Kentucky outlasts the Broncos in the First Round, Iowa State is likely waiting in the Second Round. The Cyclones are an elite team, with one of the best 3-point shooters in the country in Milan Momcilovic.

ESPN’s Jeff Borzello predicted every game for the NCAA Tournament, with score predictions. Borzello has Kentucky winning 79-75 in the First Round vs. Santa Clara, but he has them falling to Iowa State in the Second Round 79-69. In his analysis of the region, Borzello doesn’t even mention a word about the Cats.
Looking at the early predictions, the Cats clearly aren’t expected to do much in the NCAA Tournament, a far cry from where much of the national media was at the beginning of the season.
Kentucky played in St. Louis in 2014 in the first weekend of their run to the National Championship. They were a No. 8 seed that knocked out Wichita State, Louisville, and Michigan in three straight games, with the Shockers entering that game undefeated and the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region.
Maybe this Kentucky team will find another gear and make a run to the Sweet 16 again. Time will tell, but first the Cats must find a way to get past Santa Clara.
