Texas Longhorns make NCAA Tournament, to face NC State in play-in game

It has been a nervous weekend for first year head coach Sean Miller and the Texas Longhorns men’s basketball program. The Longhorns crashed out of the SEC postseason tournament in the first round. The loss to Ole Miss capped a finish to the season that saw UT loose five of its final six. But the NCAA tournament selection show has revealed Texas is in the Big Dance.

The Longhorns (18-14) will head to Dayton, OH to face NC State (20-13) in the First Four, formally know as the play-in game. The game will be either March 17 or 18 and be televised on truTV. The winner will enter the full bracket as the No. 11 seed in the West Region. The winner will face No. 6 seed BYU in Portland.

The Longhorns beat the Wolfpack earlier this season, 102-97, during the Maui Invitational in November. The Wolfpack had a similar end to the season as Texas, going 2-4 to end the year.

This is the second year in a row the Horns are in the First Four. Texas was one of the last four in to this year’s March Madness, but not the final team in the tournament. According to Chairman of the NCAA Men’s Division 1 Basketball Committee Keith Gill, the final team in was SMU.

The top seed in the West Region is Big 12 Champion Arizona. The Longhorns would face the Wildcats if both teams reach the Elite Eight. The West Region also includes three other conference champions: Big 10 champion Purdue is the No. 2 seed, West Coast Conference champion Gonzaga is the No. 3 seed and SEC champion Arkansas is the No. 4 seed.

The Longhorns could face either Purdue or Gonzaga in the Sweet Sixteen if they advance that far, while they could potentially meet rival Arkansas in the Elite Eight.
